Fashioned from Oystersteel (Rolex's proprietary 904L stainless steel blend), the latest Rolex Explorer 40's case spans 40mm in diameter and 11.6mm in thickness, aligning it with the stature of its 36mm counterpart. Despite sharing the same height, the increased diameter of the 40mm version imparts a subtly flatter feel, which becomes apparent when holding it or wearing it on your wrist.

Since its debut in 1953, Rolex has consistently crafted iterations of the Explorer, each time aiming to surpass its predecessors. The introduction of the new 40mm Explorer ref. 224270, offered alongside the 36mm ref. 124270, marks a noteworthy moment. This is because, apart from the Yacht-Master, it's the only Rolex sport model available in more than one case size. Within the unique Rolex universe, launching a new size of an existing model is indeed significant news. This change stands out as one of the most substantial developments in the Explorer line, which has seen continuous production for seventy years.
