The Seiko Prospex SLA051J1, released in 2021 to mark the 80th anniversary of the birth of legendary Japanese explorer Naomi Uemura, is a well-executed 44 mm stainless steel professional dive watch with a beautifully textured charcoal grey dial — a mountain-inspired surface pattern that catches the light in a quietly compelling way. Applied square luminescent hour markers, arrow-tipped hands coated with LumiBrite and a date display at 4:30 give the dial an unmistakably purposeful layout. Uemura, the first person to summit the highest peak on each of five continents and the first to complete a 12,500km solo dog-sled run across the Arctic, wore a Seiko diver throughout his expeditions — a story that gives this watch real depth beyond its specifications. The asymmetric case with crown at 4 o'clock and Zaratsu-polished sides is a faithful nod to the original 6105 design. At its heart beats the in-house Seiko Calibre 8L35, a hand-windable automatic movement with 26 jewels and a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. A curved sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating protects the dial. Water resistance is rated at 200 metres.
